Distance Learning Week 10

Man oh man does it ever feel like June! This week I'm doing something a little bit different. I'm not sure when iPads will be collected so I want to make sure that we get the chance to share kind thoughts and memories with all of our classmates. I have created a Warm and Fuzzies Digital Yearbook for each of my classes using Google Slides and FlipGrid. The goal is for you to leave either a written message or video message sharing things you like about each person in your class. At the end of the year, I will make sure that you all have your own digital keepsake. I have also included the usual reading and writing options for those students who wish to do a little extra work.

Here's the learning menu for this week:

Week 9 of Distance Learning

                             Weekly Message Video
And just like that, we are in the month of June! Hard to believe that we only have 19 days left before the summer holidays! I will be making a trip to school this week to gather all of your portfolios and writer's notebooks so they can be returned to you when you go to school on June 8th to collect things from your lockers. If you could return any books that you have borrowed from me when you come to gather your belongings, that would be greatly appreciated. I also wanted to give you a heads up that there will be a few afternoons this month that I will be taking to work on writing my report cards. I don't have the exact dates but will be sure to let you know in the Reading Class Discussion in advance.

Here's your learning menu for this week:

Please be sure to use the Goal Setting form that I have created for you to help you to stay on track. It is pinned in the Reading Class Discussion, linked in the slide deck, and it is also available right here.

Reminder To My Grade 8s
Please make your grad art a priority this week. The sooner you get it in the better. We are all working very hard to get ready for your virtual graduation and we would really appreciate getting your submissions in a timely manner.

Week 8 of Distance Learning

Weekly Video Message
What a gorgeous weekend we just had! Now that's what I'm talking about! I'm so thankful for strong wifi so I can sit in my backyard instead of my basement and work from my computer! It feels like the month of May has flown by because here we are in the last week! Thank you to all the grade 8s and their families who have sent in the photos and most memorable moments for our graduation video. Your next task is to create your grad art. I've included some screenshots of the slide deck with the instructions below.

I only had two people from both classes indicate that they were interested in doing the audiobook club and they both picked different books so I'm going to leave that idea for now.

Here's a look at what's on the learning menu for this week:

Week 7 of Distance Learning

                                                              Weekly Video Message

I hope everyone enjoyed the Victoria Day long weekend. I'm sure glad that the temperature has warmed up. I know it makes such a difference for me when I can spend some time outside in the garden with my hands in the dirt and the sun on my back. It's hard to believe that we are in week 7 of learning from home. Please remember to reach out for support during this crazy time. I know how hard it is for everyone to be away from their friends and sports and school. We can make it through this and together we are stronger! Please check out the Mindful Mikes session this Thursday at 2:00. I'll be posting the link in the class discussion.

Here's the plan for this week:

Week 6 of Distance Learning

So much great sharing took place last week during our Google Meets. It almost felt like we were back at school.  After kids shared some of their passion projects I couldn't wipe the smile off my face. I hope the kids had a similar feeling. We are going to continue to share passion projects on Wednesdays moving forward at 1:30. I can't wait to see what is shared next. I'm pretty sure that we have a bearded dragon habitat and Star Wars lego movie coming up soon!

We are full steam ahead with graduation planning. We will be holding our Graduation on June 24th and it will be a virtual celebration. We haven't worked out all the details but will let you know as soon as we finalize things. We will be voting on our class valedictorian this week so make sure you get your nominations in!

Thanks to the kids who have been giving me input to help me with my planning. Here's the game plan for this week:

Week 5 of Distance Learning

Here we are in the month of May, getting ready to jump into our fifth week of distance e-learning. May 4th -8th is Mental Health week so I'll be posting different activities throughout the week on our Class Discussion on Showbie. The goal is to share some strategies that can help us to clear our heads and focus on the positive.
Monday is Star Wars Day - May the 4th be with you! I couldn't resist including an assignment that takes a look at the multi-generational story that takes place in a galaxy far, far away! I hope you enjoy doing a deep dive into this George Lucas creation.

English Options For This Week

With only a couple months left in the year, we need to start to make preparations for graduation. I have included a slide in this week's deck asking for your help in the creation of a Graduation Class of 2020 video compilation. I know this will take a while to make so I wanted to get a jump on it now to ensure that everyone is included.
